LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - MAY 6, 2018 LeRoy Little League Opening Day Orioles 7 Twins 1 The Orioles and Twins began week one of the regular season, both coming off opening day victories. Starting pitchers Merritt Holly (Orioles) and Ayden Riggi (Twins) started off strong, both allowing no runs through 2 innings. The Twins broke through in the top of the 3rd inning, when AdamWoodworth drew a leadoff walk and later scored on Tony Piazza’s double. The Orioles how- ever would answer in the bottom half. After Drew Strollo was hit by a pitch, four consecutive hits by Adrian Stephens, Merritt Holly, Holden Sullivan, and Jace Jedrewski would plate 3 runs. The Orioles would strike again in the fourth. Strollo again would lead things off with single, and a triple by Adrian Ste- phens would score him. Hits by Holly, Sullivan, and Jedrewski would tack on two more runs to make the score 6-1 Ori- oles after 4. Strollo would score again in the 5th to cap the scoring at 7-1 Orioles. Merritt Holly (9 Ks) and Adrian Stephens (5 Ks) would share pitching du- ties for the Orioles, both going 3 innings with Holly earning the win. Drew Strollo reached base all 4 times he was up, with 2 hits, scoring 3 runs. Holly (2 runs, 1 RBI) and Stephens (2 runs, 2 RBI) each banged out 3 hits. Holden Sullivan and Jace Je- drewski both had 2 hits with 1 RBI and 2 RBI respectively. Martin MacConnell drew two walks. Brady McClurg contrib- uted with his first Little League hit! Ayden Riggi and Jacob Iten both pitched well for the Twins. Tony Piazza, walked, doubled with an RBI and Adam Woodworth walked twice and scored. Jack Egeling singled and walked. Also reaching base on walks were Jacob Iten, Dylan Maciag, and Elijah Iten was hit by a pitch. White Sox 10 A’s 4 After opening day losses, both the A’s and White Sox were coming into this match up looking for their first win. The A’s would get on the board first and Jackson Fix had a lead-off single and later steal around the bases to score. The White Sox chipped in 2 runs of their own after back to back singles by Parker Dowell and Jude Sherman. Jude drove in Park- er and a fielder’s choice ball by Landen Saeva brought in Jude. In the 3rdinning, Jackson Fix would again reach base on a single. He would later score on a hit by Connor Elmore. The White Sox would add 3 more runs in the 3rd and 3 in the 4th. Parker Dowell scored on a double from Tommy Condidorio. Tommy would score next on a single from Joey Costa and Joey would be driven in on a single from Brayden Chase making the score 8-2 White Sox after 4 innings of play. The 5th inning brought excitement when Jackson Fix would again score on a laser shot to the right field wall, racing around all the bases for an inside-the-park homerun. The White Sox would add 2 more runs in the 5th and the A’s added 1 more in the 6th on a triple from Jackson Fix scoring Jacob Elmore. That proved not to be enough as the White Sox would hold on for the victory. Pitching a com- plete game for the Sox was Parker Dow- ell. He struck out 4 batters and had good defense behind him. Ryan Shirley, Zac Tooley, and Jacob Elmore would combine for 13 strikeouts on pitching duty for the A’s. to round out the hitting for the A’s Grady Gilligan, Jacob Elmore, and Kyle Northrup would each add a single. For the White Sox Laden Saeva, Jude Sher- man, and Parker Dowell would add sin- gles. Tigers 2 White Sox 1 The Tigers and White Sox met in what would become a game dominated by defense and pitching. The Tigers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning behind a leadoff single by Alex Spezzano followed by a double by Connor Hegeman, RBI by Jackson Spezzano, RBI single by Lily Uberty and a single by Josh Noble. The score would remain 2-0 until the third inning when the White Sox would plate a run. Parker Dowell singled and moved to 3rd base on consecutive past balls. Jude Sherman reached base by drawing a walk. Tommy Condidorio would come up with 2 on and 2 out. A hard hit ball to the in- field allowed Dowell to score. The throw to first scooted away however Lily Uberty made a fantastic throw home to throw out Sherman attempting to tie the score. This would be it for drama until the top of the fifth. Tommy Condidorio blasted a one out triple to right field bringing the tying run to third with two chances to tie the score. However, the White Sox’s efforts to tie the game would fall short after Alex Spezzano struck out the next batter and induced a ground ball back to the mound for the final out. The White Sox offense was led by Tommy Condidorio who was 2-3 with a double and a triple. Parker Dowell add- ed a single, walk and run scored. Also drawing walks for the White Sox were Jude Sherman and Joey Reschke. Tommy Condidorio handled the pitching duties for the Sox and pitched a great game in defeat allowing 6 hits, no walks while striking out 5 over 5 innings. Offensively for the Tigers, Lily Uberty was 2-2 with an RBI, Josh Noble was 2-2 with a double, Alex Spezzano added a single and run scored, Connor Hegeman doubled and scored a run and Jackson Spezzano had 1 RBI. Jackson Spezzano, Connor Hegeman and Alex Spezzano teamed up to handle the pitch- ing duties combining to allow just 3 hits while walking 3 and striking out 8. Alex Spezzano recorded the win while pitching the final 2 1/3 innings allowing 1 hit and striking out 3. Tigers 13 Red Sox 8 The Tigers and White Sox got to- gether for a Friday afternoon showdown played at 4:00 after a rainout two days pri- or. This game would keep the score keep- ers busy totaling 21 combined runs and 19 hits. The Tigers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Lily Uberty doubled driving home Connor Hegeman who singled two hitters before. The Red Sox would come right back and snag the lead in the bottom of the first when Peter Clark tripled to deep right center field scoring Josh Horn- er and Wyatt Draper who both reached on walks. The Tigers added three more runs in the top of the 2nd inning. Noah Kaczanowski and Sierra Burk each sin- gled to begin the inning. Then, with two outs, Alex Spezzano would single home Kaczanowski. Connor Hegeman would follow with a double scoring Sierra Burk and Alex Spezzano. The Tigers would hold down the Red Sox in the bottom half of the inning. Tigers 4, Red Sox 2. The Tigers and Red Sox would com- bine to score 8 runs, 4 apiece, in the 3rd inning. In the top half of the inning, Lily Uberty led off with a single, followed by walks by Noah Kaczanowski and Sier- ra Burk to load the bases. Aidan Weav- er followed with a big 2 RBI single and Alex Spezzano would drive in 2 more runs behind him. It was now the Red Sox turn. Josh Horner led off with a triple and scored on Joey Stephany’s RBI single. Antonio Martinez walked followed by a double by Wyatt Draper that scored 2 more runs. Tigers 8, Red Sox 6 In the 4th inning the Tigers would add another run on an RBI by Josh Noble that scored Lily Uberty who was standing on 2nd base after a double. In the bottom half, the Red Sox added two of their own on RBI hits by Tony Martinez and Wyatt Draper. Tigers 9, Red Sox 8 The Tigers would add four more runs in the 5th to round out the scoring. Walks by Grant Northrup and Alex Spez- zano were followed by a double by Con- nor Hegeman that scored two and an RBI single by Lily Uberty that scored one run. Final Score Tigers 13, Red Sox 8 Leading the Tigers at the plate were Lily Uberty who was 4-4 with 2 runs, 2 doubles and 2 RBI, Connor Hegeman who was 3-4 with 2 runs, 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Alex Spezzano went 2-3 with a double and a walk while scoring twice. Josh Noble added a hit and RBI. Noah Kaczanowski scored twice, walked twice to go with a single. Sierra Burk recorded a hit, a walk and scored two runs. Aidan Weaver added 2 RBI on a single and Grant Northrup reached on a walk. Lily Uberty recorded the win for the Tigers on the mound throwing 3 1/3 innings while allowing 4 hits, 3 walks and striking out 9. Josh Noble finished it up allowing 1 hit and striking out 3. Offensively for the Red Sox, Josh Horner hit a triple, walked and scored two runs. Joey Stephany scored twice while adding an RBI single. Antonio Martinez walked, tripled, had an RBI and scored twice. Wyatt Draper recorded 3 RBI on a double and a walk and Peter Clark smashed a triple. Joey Stephany, Antonio Martinez, Wyatt Draper and Josh Horner teamed up to handle the pitching duties for the Red Sox. Yankees 4 Indians 3 In the top of the first inning Andrew Pocock started on the mound for the Yan- kees. The Indian’s Cal Koukides drew a walk and later scored on a passed ball. Pocock struck out 3 batters in the inning. In the bottom of the first, Ieain Frawley got the start on the mound for the Indians. After a Jake Higgins’ single and 2 walks the Yankees loaded the bases but were un- able to score, leaving the Indians up 1-0 after 1. In the second inning Luke Lathan took over the pitching duties for the Yan- kees. The Indians would extend their lead in the game to 2-0 after Chase Cummings singled and later scored. Jagger Smith also added a hit in the inning for the In- dians. In the bottom half of the inning Ieain Frawley would hold the Yankees scoreless, striking out 2 batters. In the third Luke Lathan would hold the Indians scoreless after a Iaein Frawley double. In the bottom of the third the Yankees bats started to come alive. Jake Higgins lead off the inning for the Yankees with a hard hit double. Luke Lathan followed with a single. Then Avante Walker stepped to the plate and hit a critical RBI single to score Higgins. Up next Simon Green would record the first hit and RBI of his little league career, scoring Luke Lathan to tie the game at 2-0. Both teams would be held scoreless in the 4th inning. In the top of the fifth Iaein Frawley would hit his second double of the game and was then scored on an RBI double from Austin Bogue, to put the Indians back ahead 3-2. The Yankees would get out of the inning after a great relay from left fielder Jacob Tracy, hit the short stop Jake Higgins in left field. Higgins made a perfect throw to home and Xavien Walk- er put the tag on in just before the runner crossed home plate. In the bottom of the fifth, Andrew Pocock lead the inning off for the Yankees with a double. Pocock would score in the inning after Jack Cur- rin hit his first single and RBI of his little league career. The game was tied 3-3 af- ter 5. In the 6th the Indians Jagger Smith added a single but was left on base. In the bottom of the 6th the Yan- kees Jake Higgins would remain hot at the plate hitting his second double of the game. Higgins would score the winning run after a game winning RBI single by Luke Lathan. Hitting for the Yankees, Jake Higgins was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles a single and 2 runs scored, Luke Lathan was 2-2 with a walk 2 singles an RBI and 1 run scored, Andrew Pocock was 1 for 2 with a double and a walk. Avante Walker, Jack Currin, and Simon Green all added critical singles and RBIs for the Yankees. These three young hitters proved to be the difference in the game for Yankees. Hitting for the Indians, Iaein Fraw- ley was 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and 1 run scored, Austin Bogue was 1 for 2 with a walk and a double, Jagger Smith was 2 for 3, Macien McKenzie was 1 for 2 with a walk, and Chase Cummings added a hit and scored a run. Cal Koukides drew a walk and scored 1 run. Pitching for the Yankees were Andrew Pocock and Luke Lathan. Pitching for the Indians were Iaein Frawley, Macien McKenzie, and Cal Koukides. Indians 5 White Sox 1 The Indians hosted the White Sox in the chilly rain-shortened second Satur- day of the season. The White Sox would put a run on the board in the top of the 1st inning after Parker Dowell led off the game with a double to left field and would be driven in by Tommy Condidorio who singled. Starting pitcher for the Indians, Maicen McKenzie, would settle in and only allow one more hit for the remainder of the game. Maicen pitched 4 innings al- lowing 1 run on 3 hits, striking out 9 and only allowing 2 walks. The Indians would get on the board quickly in the bottom half of the 1st in- ning. Maicen McKenzie would lead off with a walk and later score on a single by Cal Koukides. Iaein Frawley would follow and add 2 runs to the board with a home run over the center field fence. Congrats Iaein on your first Little League home run! The Indians would score a run in the 3rd inning on an RBI single from Chase Cummings, and again in the 4th inning when Joey Vernaccini scored on a ball batted by Cole Tonzi. Landon Saeva pitched well in his first appearance for the White Sox al- lowing 5 runs on 5 hits while striking out 2. Hitting for the White Sox were Park- er Dowell (single, double), and Tommy Condidorio. Hitting for the Indians were Maicen McKenzie, Cal Koukides, Chase Cummings, and Iaein Frawley (single, home run).
